The mild weather in Velden combines the positve effects of the alpine and the mediterranean climate. |
|
Situated on the southern slopes of the Austrian
alpine region the province is the sunniest in the country. The Carinthian
lake district is blessed with long, languid summer days and balmy evenings.
At lake Wörthersee mountain and lake climates merge favourably and,
contrary to a to sea climate, the air is not salty and there are no strong
winds:
- high atmospheric humidity
- increased warmth and luminosity of the sun (due to sea level height
and water reflection)
- little temperature variation (the lake accumulates heat).
Temperatures: Due to the thermal effect of the lake high summer temperatures
last far into autumn. The climate is milder than in mountain areas of similar
sea level height and sudden changes in temperature have less impact in a
humid region. Night frosts early in the year are unusual and thunderstorms
and rain in summer do not chill the air as the lake radiates warmth.
Precipitation: the geographic position on the lee side of the
southern and, above all, northern mountain range brings little rainfall.
Although precipitation is predominant in summer, it is mainly limited
to heat thunderstorms and short bursts of rain.
Water temperature: The water temperature of Lake
Wörthersee can reach up to 27°C, due to unusually
long and intense sunshine and mountain ranges which surround and protect
the lake from cold precipitation. Moreover, these mountain ranges act
as wind shields and thus prevent temperature falls caused by air currents.
Additionally Lake Wörthersee has few cold water mountain inflows,
it is fed by many subterranean springs with constant temperatures. Apart
from the river Glanfurt the lake does not have any in or out-flows worth
mentioning. |
